At the 40th SEUS-Japan Conference, held October 21-24, 2017 in Greenville, South Carolina, Hirokuni “Harry” Watanabe was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by Consul General Shinozuka for the betterment of relationships between US and Japan.

Mr. Hirokuni “Harry” Watanabe, South Carolina Ambassador for Economic Development, awarded the Certificate of Commendation
On October 22nd, at the 40th SEUS-Japan Conference, Consul General Shinozuka awarded South Carolina’s Ambassador for Economic Development, Hirokuni Watanabe, the Consul General’s Certificate of Commendation. Also attending were SC Governor Henry McMaster; Ambassador of Japan to the U.S. Kenichiro Sasae; Congressman Jeff Duncan, SEUS-Japan Chairwoman Minor Shaw; SC State Senator Hugh Leatherman; SC Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt; Clemson University President James Clements; Fulji Film Manufacturing U.S.A. President Todd Croker; JAASC Co-Chairman Craig Lundgren; and about 180 other delegates.
The Certificate of Commendation is an award given by the Consul General to individuals and organizations within his jurisdiction who promote “mutual understanding and friendly goodwill between Japan and other countries.”
After beginning his new post at FujiFilm Manufacturing U.S.A, Inc. in 1991, first as Vice President then President, Hirokuni “Harry” Watanabe greatly contributed to the building of the Japanese community in South Carolina and to Japan-US mutual understanding through his efforts to promote exchange between the state of South Carolina, local officials and business leaders, in particular serving twice as Co-Chairman of the Japan American Association of South Carolina. Mr. Watanabe’s achievements are highly valued by the South Carolina government, receiving the South Carolina State Ambassador for Economic Development Award in 2003, and the Order of the Palmetto in 2005, South Carolina’s highest civilian award. At this 40th commemoration of the economic exchange between Japan and seven states in the U. S. Southeast promoted by the SEUS-Japan Joint Annual Meeting in South Carolina, the Consul General honors Mr. Watanabe’s over 25 years of achievements with the presentation of the Certificate of Commendation.
渡辺泰邦サウスカロライナ州経済開発大使に対する総領事表彰の実施
１０月２２日、篠塚総領事は、サウスカロライナ州グリーンビル市における第４０回日本・米国南東部会合同会議開催の機会を捉え、渡邊泰邦サウスカロライナ州経済開発大使に対する「総領事表彰」を行いました。このイベントには、ヘンリー・マクマスター サウスカロライナ州知事、佐々江賢一郎駐米大使、ジェフ・ダンカン連邦下院議員、マイナー・ショウ日本・米国南東部会合同会議米側議長、ヒュー・レザーマン サウスカロライナ州上院仮議長、ボビー・ヒット サウスカロライナ州商務長官、ジェームス・クレメンツ クレムソン大学学長、トッド・クローカー 富士フィルム・マニュファクチャリングU.S.A.社長、クレイグ・ランドグレン サウスカロライナ日米協会共同会長等約180名が出席しました。
総領事表彰は、日本と「諸外国との相互理解及び友好親善の促進」に寄与した個人、団体に対して管轄地域の総領事が行う顕彰です。
渡邊“ハリー”泰邦氏は、１９９１年に富士フィルム（株）から富士フィルム・マニュファクチャリングU.S.A.（サウスカロライナ州グリーンウッド所在）に赴任後、副社長及び社長として、サウスカロライナ州政府及び地元自治体、経済関係者の対日理解の促進と日米交流に尽力する中、特に、サウスカロライナ日米協会共同会長を２度務めるなど、日本人コミュニティの発展、日・サウスカロライナ州の相互理解、交流促進に大きく寄与されました。渡邊氏は、その功績をサウスカロライナ州政府に高く評価され、２００３年にはサウスカロライナ州経済開発大使賞、また、２００５年にはパルメット賞（同州が民間人に授与する最高位の賞）を授与されています。今回、日本と米国南東部７州との間の経済交流を促進する日本・米国南東部会合同会議の記念すべき第４０回会合がサウスカロライナ州で開催されるにあたり、渡邊氏の２５年以上にわたる功績を称え総領事より渡邊氏に表彰状が贈呈されました。
